About

First exhibited in 2016, the project emerged from a unique collaboration between Black queer photographer Ajamu and PhD/doctoral researcher and heritage practitioner/manager Noam-Shaan Knan. Building on the landmark Rainbow Jews project, which documented LGBTQ+ Jewish history across the UK, the exhibition celebrates the richness, diversity and resilience of queer Jewish life. In bringing these national stories to Manchester Jewish Museum, we have expanded the exhibition through a local lens – telling new stories featuring LGBTQ+ Jewish people with connections to Manchester and inviting new contributions to be part of the display through the exhibition period.

Part of the gallery includes the opportunity to add your own stories, experiences and perspectives. Here we reflect on missing LGBTQ+ stories in our collection. With your help, we can extend representation at Manchester Jewish Museum.

If you identify as an LGBTQ+ Jew in Manchester and would like to contribute your story to the gallery, please complete the form below: The exhibition will be on display from Sunday, 14 June and is available as part of General Admission to the museum. Please note that the exhibition includes personal testimonies, with references to discrimination, conversion therapy and difficult themes, and includes strong language.
