About

Join us on our opening night as SCENE celebrates the 10th anniversary of Moonlight. Ten years after its release, Moonlight remains one of the defining films of modern cinema. Barry Jenkins's luminous coming-of-age masterpiece, based on an unproduced play by Tarell Alvin McCraney that drew on his own experiences growing up as a Black queer man in Miami, traces the life of Chiron across three chapters, crafting an intimate portrait of Black queer identity, love and self-acceptance with breathtaking tenderness and visual grace. A landmark for QTIPOC audiences, Moonlight transformed what queer cinema could look like on the world's biggest stage, placing a deeply personal Black queer story at its centre. Its historic triumph at the 89th Academy Awards - becoming the first LGBTQ-themed film to win Best Picture and the first Best Picture winner with an all-Black cast - was briefly eclipsed by the infamous envelope mix-up. A decade on, that extraordinary Oscars moment has become little more than a footnote. What endures is the film itself: a work of rare beauty and emotional power that has earned its place as a modern classic and a pillar of the queer film canon.
