About
Discover A Life in Letters, a free mini exhibition exploring how personal correspondence reveals the relationships, personalities, and social attitudes of the eighteenth century. Drawing on treasures from the Birthplace collection, the display features three letters written by Samuel Johnson, a letter by the writer Anna Seward, and David Garrick’s wax seal. Through these remarkable objects, visitors can explore different perspectives on Johnson’s life and learn how letters were delivered. The exhibition was developed following a student placement by Harvey Venables, a history student at Keele University, whose research into the museum’s collections helped bring these stories to life. Location and accessibility A Life in Letters is located in the Attic, on the fifth floor of the Birthplace. Please note that this space is accessible only by stairs. Due to the building’s Grade I listed status, we are unable to install a lift or ramp, widen doorways, or modify the handrails. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Free admission. Donations welcome. This mini exhibition is on until 31 October 2026. To check opening hours and any planned closures, please click here.
