About
A comedy night powered by research, curiosity and creativity. Hypothetically Speaking is Cambridge’s new regular comedy night where serious research is seriously entertaining.
Researchers take to the stage to share short, entertaining sets inspired by their work, supported by professional comedians and a live audience who are genuinely interested in ideas. 7th September Line-Up Dave Chawner (Headliner) Dave is a number 1 best selling author, multi award-winning stand up and presenter.
He’s presented for BBC’s Tomorrow’s World and has appeared on BBC, ITV & Channel 4 on such shows as BBC Breakfast, Lorraine, Loose Women, The Jeremy Vine Show, Morning Live and is a regular on Good Morning Britain as well as appearances on Radio 1, Radio 2 & Radio 4. His book Weight Expectations became a best-seller just 3 days after being released.
Dave has also written for The Guardian, The Telegraph, Metro, Cosmopolitan, GQ & Reader’s Digest As a stand up comic, Dave has performed 7 solo shows at The Edinburgh Fringe and received an award for his show Normally Abnormal at The Houses Of Parliament in 2014.
In 2023 he won The Pegasus Ongoing Comedian Of The Year award at The Edinburgh Fringe. ‘Thank goodness for Dave; he tells his invaluable story with humour and tongue in cheek charm…hilariously entertaining’ – Mail On Sunday ‘quirky, moving & hilarious’ – Indy 100 ‘sharp, insightful, touching, but above all really, really funny’ – Three Weeks Pragya Agarwal Dr Pragya Agarwal is a behavioural and social scientist, author and speaker, who has written four books, and advised organisations around the world.
Her kids think her job is to write emails all day, so in her search for a real job she is trying stand-up comedy. 7th September Line-Up Dave Chawner (Headliner) Dave is a number 1 best selling author, multi award-winning stand up and presenter.

Tonight, he’s swapping academic conferences for a comedy stage for the very first time. Alice Yuen Alice is a developmental biologist who spends her days asking how cells know what to do and her evenings wondering the same thing about herself.
She studies how embryos build bodies, communicates science to the public, and has learnt that both pursuits involve a surprising amount of improvisation.
Akhtar Hussain Mougamadou Soultane I am a final year slave (PhD student) at CEB, probably the nicest place to work in Cambridge. I work in a wet lab, which means I am what you think of when people say ‘scientist’, labcoat and all.
I try, with some success, to make stuff inside artificial cells. Don’t worry if you don’t know what this means. By the time I’m done, ‘artificial cells’ will be engrained in your brain cells.
