John Constable, Old Sarum, drawing, 1829, Bequest of Sir Edward Marsh via Art Fund Constable breathed new life into landscape painting with his ground-breaking approach. Working outdoors, he made a concerted effort to capture the effects of weather and different times of day. Although unfashionable during his lifetime, Constable’s influence on British art was profound.
